Why make a home inventory
After a fire, theft, or storm, you’ll usually need to list what was damaged or lost, what it was, and what it would cost to replace. That’s hard to remember under stress. An inventory made now also helps you choose enough personal property coverage.
- Go room by room. Start with expensive items, then add everyday things like clothing and kitchenware in groups.
- Take photos or a video of each room, including open closets and drawers. Note where you keep them.
- Record brand, model, and serial numbers for electronics and appliances.
- Download a copy and keep it somewhere outside your home, such as email or cloud storage, so it survives if your home doesn’t.

Using your inventory
- Compare the total with your personal property limit on your homeowners or renters declarations page. Your policy decides how claims are paid, including whether it pays replacement cost or actual cash value.
- Many policies pay only a limited amount for jewelry, collectibles, and similar valuables unless you add coverage for them.
- Update the list after big purchases and at least once a year.
