Why add up your belongings
Renters insurance personal property coverage pays to repair or replace your belongings after a covered loss, such as a fire or theft, up to the limit you choose. Many people guess low. Walk through your home and estimate what it would cost to buy each group of items new today.
Your estimate
- Cost to replace your belongings
- Personal property limit to consider
- Rounded up to the nearest $5,000.
Many policies pay only a limited amount for jewelry, watches, and similar valuables unless you add extra coverage for them. Check your policy’s special limits and ask about scheduling valuable items.
Enter at least one amount to see an estimate.
Before you choose a limit
- Replacement cost or actual cash value: replacement cost pays what it costs to buy similar items new; actual cash value subtracts depreciation for age and wear, which can mean much smaller payments. Your policy decides which one applies.
- Renters insurance usually also includes liability coverage, which is separate from the personal property limit.
- Floods and earthquakes are usually not covered by a standard renters policy.
- Keep photos or a video of your belongings and receipts for expensive items. They make a claim much easier.
About this estimate
This calculator is general education, not insurance, financial, or legal advice. It uses simple math on the numbers you enter and can’t account for everything about your situation. Your policy, your insurer’s rules, and your state’s requirements control what is covered and what it costs.
For advice about your own coverage, talk with a licensed insurance agent. Questions about an insurer or agent can go to your state insurance department.
